About ICAN

ICAN is a small social services agency located on the east side of Indianapolis in the historic Irvington neighborhood. Started over a decade ago by pastors of nearby churches who saw a great need for local social services, ICAN has grown and evolved many times in the last 10+ years.

In 2022, we assisted almost 400 clients in less than 6 months. We assisted over 1,000 clients in 2023, and have seen that many in the first half of 2024 so far.

ICAN strives to help our neighbors in need lead safer, healthier, more stables lives by providing an assessment and case management to determine the barriers preventing a client from success.

We help address these barriers by assisting with food insecurity, hosting a clothing closet, addressing transportation needs, and helping with personal care items. We assist client's in many other ways, and provide referrals to other organizations which may be better suited to fit the client's individual need.

Our response to each client is as unique as their individual need's, and we pride ourselves on providing one-on-one empathetic assistance.

What We Do

Address Barriers

When client's come into or make contact with ICAN, we first discuss what issues are preventing the client from accessing basic necessities, such as food, clothing, hygiene items, etc. Some times this is as simple as getting a client a bus pass to get to court or help with a job application, and sometimes the process is much more complicated - each situation is as unique as the client that walks through the door.

Provide Assistance

ICAN hosts a food pantry, a clothing closet, and provides personal hygiene items as well as bus passes when donations and grants allow us to do so. We provide information on continuing education as well as local job fairs. We distribute Narcan and fentany/xylazine testing supplies and substance use disorder education. We are also a part of several neighborhood coalitions and partner with community organizations to help address our neighbors needs.

Follow Up

Efforts are made to refer clients to outside organizations when they are better suited to their needs. We try to reach out and make sure that these referrals are successful and clients are able to get the assistance they are seeking.

for those in need
